Description
The Vladimir icon of the Mother of God is one of the most well-known and venerated icons of Theotokos. It belongs to the iconographic type called Tenderness, where the Holy Child and His most pure Mother touch one another's cheeks.
In the 12th century, the Vladimir Icon was brought to the lands of Rus from Byzantium. This image was a gift presented to the Kiev prince Mstislav Vladimirovich. Later, the icon was placed in the Virgin Monastery of Vyshhorod.
In 1155, St. Andrey Bogolyubsky, the son of Yuri Dolgoruky, brought the image to Vladimir and placed it in the Assumption Cathedral, which he had built. After that, the icon became known as the Vladimir Icon. In 1395, the icon was first brought to Moscow. Thus, with the blessing of the Mother of God, the spiritual ties between Byzantium and Russia were strengthened through Kiev, Vladimir, and Moscow.
The Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God is commemorated on several days throughout the year (May 21, June 23, August 26). The most significant feast day is August 26, which celebrates the acquisition of the Vladimir Icon during its transfer from Vladimir to Moscow.
In 1395, the invincible military commander Tamerlane headed for Rus, and Grand Prince Vasily I, not relying on the military forces exhausted by the Battle of Kulikovo and the previous invasion of the Golden Horde Khan Tokhtamysh, went to Vladimir for the miraculous Theotokos of Vladimir Icon.
On August 26, the day of the transfer of the icon to Moscow and the universal prayer before it, Tamerlane suddenly changed the direction of his troops and decided to leave for the steppes. In a dream, he saw a high mountain, from the top of which saints descended with shining staffs, and above them, in bright radiance, appeared the Majestic Woman. She ordered him to leave the territory of Russia. Awaking in awe, Tamerlane asked to explain the meaning of his dream. The knowledgeable ones replied that the Woman in the rays of light is the Mother of God, the great Intercessor of Christians. Following this, Tamerlane ordered his troops to return. In memory of the meeting of the icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir in the centre of Moscow, the famous Sretensky Monastery was founded.

Materials
This icon is painted using the following materials:
- Tempera paints
- Lime, pine, or alder board
- Gesso
- Colored wax
- Gold leaf
- Linseed oil
- Hide glue
- Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)
Decorations
This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The background, the margins, the halo, and other elements are covered with gold leaf. The icon is decorated with chiseling on gesso and precious and semiprecious gemstones in casts.
It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.
The price for the icon does not include decorations such as semi-precious stones.
