Description

Born in the small Cypriot town of Trimythous, Saint Spyridon led a simple life. Lacking formal education, he was a shepherd, tending to his flock of sheep and goats. He was also a family man living righteously and with deep faith.

He generously shared his earnings with neighbors and strangers, showing compassion and piety. As a result, he was blessed with the ability to perform miracles. Saint Spyridon became the Bishop of Trimythous after his wife's passing, yet his dedication to his past role remained evident. He is often depicted wearing the traditional shepherd's hat made of willow twigs.

Despite his humble origins as a shepherd, Saint Spyridon possessed a wisdom likened to that of the Great Shepherd. Even the Byzantine emperor, Constantius, son of the renowned Constantine the Great, considered it an honour to converse with Saint Spiyridon.

Even after his death, miracles continued to happen at his relics. The slippers adorning his feet wear out each year, necessitating a symbolic replacement ceremony. These worn slippers are then distributed to churches and monasteries.

Commemorated on December 25.

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the halo, the background, and other elements are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
