Description

Saint Olga, born a pagan in Pskov and known by the Scandinavian name Helga, became Princess Olga upon her marriage. Following the birth of her son Sviatoslav she became a widow when Prince Igor was murdered by rebellious pagans. Refusing to remarry, Olga assumed the mantle of leadership, ruling and expanding the princedom.

When her son Sviatoslav reached adulthood, Olga entrusted him with the reins of power and embarked on a journey to Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. There, she embraced Christianity. Returning to her homeland, Saint Olga returned bringing icons and religious texts. She commissioned churches and embarked on a mission to enlighten her people.

Saint Olga's ministry extended to the Pskov lands, where she ordered the destruction of pagan idols and the erection of holy crosses.  She also established a church there dedicated to the Holy Trinity.  In Kiev, the year 960 witnessed the consecration of the Church of Saint Sophia, which kept the cross gifted to Olga during her baptism.

Saint Olga nurtured her grandchildren in the Christian faith, planting the seeds of faith that would blossom in the future Saint Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir. Saint Olga reposed in the Lord in the year 969.

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

A hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the halo, the background, and several other elements of the icon are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St. Elisabeth Convent.
