Description

Saint John of Shanghai spent most of his life far from his native Russia. From the Far East to the Philippines, Europe, and finally the United States, he left a lasting mark on countless lives.

Born Mikhail Maximovich-Vasilkovsky, a descendant of Russian nobility, young John harboured a deep-seated desire for the priesthood since childhood. However, under his parents' influence, he studied law and even practised in a Kharkov court briefly in 1918.

The pursuit of his true calling led him to Belgrade, where he received a theological education and embraced a monastic life. Ordained as a bishop, he embarked on a mission to serve in Shanghai.

In Shanghai, he established a haven for orphans, personally seeking out and rescuing vulnerable children from the city's slums. His tireless efforts provided shelter and life chances for an estimated 3,500 children.

Tales of his boundless generosity followed him. In Paris, he earned the nickname "John the Barefoot" for his habit of giving his shoes to the poor, often walking barefoot himself.

His journey continued in 1962, when he became Bishop of San Francisco, dedicating his final three years to serving his flock there.

Commemorated on July 2, October 12.

  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

  • 7.5×10 cm (without a hand-carved rectangular central panel, shoulder-long)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the background, and the halo are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The final price of the icon and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
