Description

Saint John Damascene was born in Damascus around 675 AD. Son to Sergius Mansur, a Christian treasurer under the caliph, John received a privileged education thanks to a learned monk his father redeemed from slavery. Upon his father's death, he entered the service of the caliph's minister.

The icon of the Mother of God "Three-Handed" appeared thanks to the saint. At that time, Byzantium was engulfed in the heresy of iconoclasm. Emperor Leo III, opposing the veneration of icons, accused John of treason for his fervent devotion to sacred images.

The Damascus caliph ordered John's right hand to be severed and hung it in the marketplace. On the same night, John asked the ruler for the severed limb and entreated the Mother of God for her healing touch. In a dream, the Virgin appeared, promising restoration and urging him to work with his hand incessantly. Upon waking, John miraculously found his hand whole again.

Overflowing with gratitude, John commissioned a silver replica of his healed hand to be attached to her icon. This became the renowned "Three-Handed" icon.

Saint John Damascene wrote the burial service, the Paschal Canon, as well as several theological and philosophical works.

Commemorated on December 17.

The inscription on the icon can be made in any language.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

This icon of St John of Damascus is available in the following sizes:

  • 15×30 cm
  • 20×35 cm
  • 25×41 cm
  • 25×52 cm

 

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins and the halo are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The final price of the icon and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
