IMP-08-10 Holy Innocents of Bethlehem
A painted icon of Holy Innocents of Bethlehem.
According to the Gospel of Matthew, Herod ordered the execution of all young male children in the vicinity of Bethlehem, so as to avoid the loss of his throne to a newborn King of the Jews whose birth had been announced to him by the Magi. 14000 children became the first martyrs for Jesus’s sake. That was a fulfillment of the Jeremiah’s prophesy, “A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.”
