In Brief about the Iveron Icon

The Iveron icon differs from others in that there is a wound depicted on the face of the Mother of God. According to tradition, the damage was made by an iconoclast with his spear. After the damage, blood flowed from the wound. Upon closer examination of the original Athonite icon, one can notice that the changes in the colour layer resemble coagulated blood. 
 
In the 9th century, the icon was owned by a devout widow who lived near the city of Nicaea. To save the holy image from the iconoclasts, the widow threw it into the sea. And the icon floated to the holy mountain of Athos. After that, a pillar of fire appeared in the sea, which was seen by the monks of the Iveron Monastery. Approaching the shore, they discovered the icon of the Mother of God. The holy image is still preserved in this monastery, founded by descendants from Iberia.
 

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

    • Tempera paints
    • Lime, alder, or pine board
    • Gesso
    • Colored wax
    • Gold leaf
    • Linseed oil
    • Hide glue
    • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

 

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel covered with various shades of gold. The halo is decorated with chiseling on gesso. This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.

Price & Deadlines

The cost of this icon of Theotokos and the time it will take to make it are negotiable, depending on its size and the complexity of its design. Once it is ready, the icon will be consecrated in St. Elisabeth Convent.
