Description
This icon depicts a man kneeling before the Mother of God. It draws inspiration from a story by St Dmitri of Rostov in his work "The Decorated Fleece."
"One man lived in sin. Even so, he showed reverence for the Mother of God and stood daily before her image, praying with the Archangel’s words to the Virgin: ‘Rejoice, O Graced One!...’
One day, he noticed the icon come alive; Christ’s wounds opened and bled. Terrified, he cried out, ‘Oh, Lord, who has done this?’ The Virgin Mary replied, ‘You and other sinners who, by your deeds, crucify My Son again.’ The sinner, realising his transgressions, tearfully begged Our Lady and the Saviour for forgiveness. Finally, he received the unexpected joy of absolution and liberation from sin."
The icon’s feast days are 1 (14) May and 9 (22) December.
Materials
This icon is painted using the following materials:
- Tempera paints
- Lime, alder, or pine board
- Gesso
- Colored wax
- Gold leaf
- Linseed oil
- Hide glue
- Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)
Decorations
This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Some elements of the vestments are painted with gold. Certain other elements of the icon are decorated with various shades of gold, too. This icon is also adorned with semiprecious gemstones in casts. It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case.
Price & Deadlines
The cost of this icon and the time it will take to make it are negotiable, depending on its size and the complexity of its design. Once it is ready, the icon will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
