053-XC The Crucifixion of the Lord

This lacquered icon of the Crucifixion of the Lord on wood is made by the lacquered icons workshop of St Elisabeth Convent. A high-quality printed image is glued to a wooden board and covered with a layer of transparent varnish. The original of this lacquered icon is an ancient Byzantine 14th-century icon of the Crucifixion of Christ. The grieving Mother of God is portrayed to the left of the crucified Savior, and St John the Theologian, the disciple and Apostle of Christ, is shown to the right. There are figures of Old Testament prophets who had prophesied about the advent of the Messiah on the margins of this icon, which symbolize the borders between the spiritual and the bodily realms.
