On 6 February and 6 June, we commemorate Saint Xenia, the Blessed One of Saint Petersburg. Born in the early eighteenth century, her life took a dramatic turn when her husband, Colonel Andrei Fedorovich Petrov, a court singer, died suddenly, leaving Xenia Grigorievna widowed at just 26 years of age.

She then gave away all her estate to the poor and stepped onto the arduous path of foolishness for Christ's sake. She wandered the streets in her late husband’s uniform, insisting it was she who had perished, not him. From then on, she would only answer to his name.

The Almighty rewarded her exceptional dedication and endurance by blessing her even while she walked this earth. Households she visited or shared meals with found themselves thriving and full of joy, and those who received gifts from the fool for Christ found unusual good fortune coming their way.

For 45 years, Saint Xenia lived an ascetic life, departing to the Lord at the beginning of the nineteenth century. She was laid to rest in the Smolensk Cemetery in Saint Petersburg, where, during her lifetime, she had helped to build the church. In time, a chapel rose above her grave, where the faithful still come to this day.

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Decorated with gold-plating of the background, the halo, and other elements of the icon; chiseling on gesso.
