Description

Matthew, one of the twelve apostles, worked as a tax collector for the Romans. He was the brother of another apostle, James. His very name, Levi, echoed the lineage of priestly Levites, descendants of Jacob, further highlighting the contrast with his unconventional background.

Matthew did not take their path immediately. Only after discerning Jesus's call did he leave everything behind to follow the Saviour. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, Matthew first spread the message of Christ in Palestine. Before embarking on a mission to distant lands, he answered the Jews' request in Jerusalem by penning the first Gospel of the New Testament. Written in Hebrew, it meticulously documented Jesus' teachings and actions, revealing the three facets of his ministry as a Prophet and Lawgiver, a King of both the earthly and spiritual realms and a High Priest offering sacrifice for humanity's sins.

Saint Matthew evangelized across numerous regions: Syria, Media, Persia, and Parthia. His tireless efforts culminated in Ethiopia, where he accepted the Martyr's crown.

Commemorated on November 29.

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the background, and the halos are covered with gold leaf. 

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The final price of the icon and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
