The icon of saint Gennadius of Novgorod is painted in the icon-painting studio of St. Elisabeth Convent.

Hagiographical, or, icons include scenes from a saint’s life around a central image. While we usually write such icons within a complete church iconostasis, we were blessed to write this icon of Saint Gennadius for an overseas patron. The central figure of the saint is surrounded by ten miniature scenes, from his birth and monastic tonsure to his repose and the translation of his relics.

Saint Gennadius (15th century) began the monastic life at Valaam under Saint Sabbatius of Solovki, later serving as Archimandrite of the Chudov Monastery in Moscow before being consecrated Archbishop of Novgorod and Pskov, a cathedra he held for some twenty years. He laboured zealously for the integrity of the Orthodox faith amid the so-called Judaizer movement, and oversaw the preparation of the first complete Church-Slavonic Bible, known as the Gennadius Bible. He also founded a school for training clergy and personally took part in their instruction.

Materials

This icon of St Gennadius of is painted using the following materials:

Tempera paints
Lime, pine, or alder board
Gesso
Colored wax
Gold leaf
Linseed oil
Hide glue
Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

The size of the icon of Saint Gennadius, Archbishop of Novgorod, is 71x100 cm - 27.9x39 inches.

Decorations

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. Decorated with gold-plating of the background and the halos, gold-painting on the vestments.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

Price & Deadlines

The final price of the icon and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration. Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
