Many angelic names have deep meanings. The name of the Archangel Gabriel translates from ancient Hebrew to "strength of God," "my strength is God," or "man of God."
Within the celestial hierarchy, Archangel Gabriel holds a position of great eminence, ranking among the Seraphim and serving as God's heavenly messenger. He wields the power of conveying divine pronouncements to humanity, acting as the instrument of God's providence.
Through the Archangel Gabriel's pronouncements, Moses recounted the creation of the world in the Book of Genesis, and the prophet Daniel foretold the rise and fall of kingdoms, the coming of the Messiah, and the destiny of the Jewish people following their Babylonian captivity.
The Archangel Gabriel played appeared to Saints Joachim and Anna, to announce the birth of their daughter, the Virgin Mary. He ministered to the Virgin Mary, bringing her sustenance while she resided in the Jerusalem Temple, and thereafter served as her guardian throughout her earthly life.
He announced the conception of John the Baptist to the elderly Zacharias, and six months later, appeared before the Blessed Virgin Mary, proclaiming her divinely chosen destiny as the Mother of the Savior. He reassured Joseph the Betrothed of the Virgin Mary's purity following the Annunciation and later warned him of King Herod's murderous plot against the Christ Child, instructing him to flee to Egypt for safety.
He heralded the birth of Christ to the Magi. During Christ's ministry, the Archangel Gabriel was dispatched to strengthen the Savior as He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. Finally, it was Archangel Gabriel who announced the glorious news of Christ's Resurrection to the myrrh-bearing women.
The Archangel Gabriel appeared before the Virgin Mary three days before her Dormition, informing her of her approaching departure from this earthly realm.
The Holy Church commemorates Archangel Gabriel on several feast days throughout the year: 21 November (8 November according to the Old Calendar), 8 April (26 March 26), and the feast of the Synaxis of the Archangel Gabriel marked on 26 July 26 (13 July).

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel covered with various shades of gold. The halo is decorated with chiseling on gesso. This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.
