Oral account has it that Jesus sent an imprint of his face on a towel to King Abgar of Edessa who, having never seen the Lord but believing in him as the Messiah, asked Jesus to cure him. This image was the basis for the subsequent icons of this kind. The original of this icon was painted in 1678 by Simon Ushakov, a Russian icon painter, and it is currently preserved in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. This lacquered icon is a copy of the original icon. A high-quality printed image is glued to a wooden board and coated with a layer of protective lacquer.
