Icons of Christ Not-Made-By-Hands
Holy Mandylion - the Image of Edessa
According to tradition, the image of our Lord and Saviour "Not Made by Hands", also known as Holy Mandylion, was His first authentic depiction. Its finding was a miracle of God: when Jesus wiped His face with a cloth, He left an imprint that became visible later on. This original image of Christ was not made by human hands. Over centuries, Orthodox iconographers have made multiple copies of this image in icons.
The icon "Not made by hands" tells us that Christ is ever-present in our lives. As we stand before it in prayer, we ask Him with humility to grant us the strength and wisdom in making important decisions and accomplishing the daily errands of our lives.
The icon of Jesus Christ "Not Made by Hands" creation process
Since 1988, the icon-painting studio of Saint Elisabeth Convent has inspired individuals and families with its images of Christ, saints and biblical events. Every iconographer strives to make their icons visually attractive and convey their spiritual aspect. Each item is made with love and prayer, to last and be treasured.
Our icon painters follow the Russian and Byzantine traditions from the 12th and 13th centuries and practise time-tested iconographic techniques. In the technique of egg yolk tempera, icons are painted on a wooden board over a gesso coating. The paints are made from ground minerals using egg yolk as an adhesive. Such icons become treasured heirlooms, passed down from generation to generation.
