Do You Love Me or Not?

question do you love me or not

A friend once shared this story with me.

A man I will call Mikhail had entered a dark season in his life. Everything seemed to be falling apart at once: his work, his personal life. He had only just begun to turn toward faith, and his heart was full of doubt and inner turmoil.

One day he was driving alone when that storm inside him finally broke loose. He began to cry out to God aloud—almost shouting into the empty cabin:
“Do You love me or not?! Answer me! Do You love me?!”

There was something raw and daring in that cry, like the boldness of the psalmist—an unguarded, desperate appeal that demanded an answer.

He was so caught up in it that he nearly lost focus on the road. Suddenly, the car in front of him—a battered old Lada—slammed on its brakes. He hit his own brakes just in time.

And then he saw it.

The rear window of that car was completely darkened, and across it, in large white letters, were the words:

“I love you, Misha.”

He froze.

All the noise inside him, all that turmoil and desperate shouting, seemed to meet a response that was quiet, unmistakable, and perfectly clear. Not a voice from heaven. Just a message on the back window of an old car.

Later he said that in that moment he felt the answer with absolute certainty. His cry had not gone unheard. It had been answered in a way so simple and so precise that doubt no longer found a foothold.

From that day on, something in him settled. The inner struggle that had tormented him began to ease, and over time he found his place in the life of the Church.
