Why Bother Doing Anything In The Earthly Life If It’s Temporary?

Question: Hello. I am 22 years old, I am a student. I have a job and live like everybody else.

Time and again, there arises a question in my brain to which I cannot really find an answer. Even when it seems that I have got an answer to it, I forget it somehow, the question resurfaces, and the answer does not come at once.

The point is this: we all understand that life is temporary and everything here on Earth is temporary, so why do we have to study, work, set goals, make plans, grow, and progress, given that we don’t really need anything? It seems that everything is futile and does not lead to anything. It doesn’t make sense.

I would like you to help me to answer this question. Perhaps, I have such questions because of my immaturity in spiritual life. Thank you in advance!

Answer: The Lord commands us to work and transform His creation (Genesis 2:15). Of course, since the Fall, human capabilities are not only limited, but also infested with sin, which is not to say that we should sit back and do nothing. On the contrary, we have to do what we can to make the world around us a better place. To this end, we need to cultivate the talents that God has given us, to strive to do every task with prayer and reasoning.

Try to make serving God the most important thing in your life, and then every good deed will acquire a new and better meaning. When the Lord sees your commitment to Him, He will also bless all the works you do as a Christian, a citizen, and a human being. Together, we can change the world for the better. This world may be temporary, but good skills will remain useful in the Kingdom of Heaven.
