A handpainted icon of Resurrection of Christ.

It wasn't until the 19th century that people started referring to this Byzantine icon of the Resurrection of Christ as "The Descent into Hell." The composition of this icon is based on the Apostolic Creed and depicts the Resurrection of Christ and the salvation of humankind. Jesus Christ is shown standing above the demolished gates of hell (sometimes icon painters portray the defeated devil under His feet, too). We see the keys, locks, and hinges of the gates of hell in the abyss. The Lord's mighty hand pulls Adam out of the abyss. He also holds a cross – a symbol of God's triumph over death - in his other hand.


This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Acrylic or tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)


This icon of the Resurrection of Christ is available in the following size: 40×52 cm.


A hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the halos, and the background of this icon are covered with various shades of gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.
