019-XC Prayer in Gethsemane
Starting at $3.00
Icon Prayer in Gethsemane (printed image on paper, wooden board, lacquer).
This icon is a copy of a picture painted in 1875-1880 by Vassily Vereshchagin for the Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow. Vassily Vereshchagin painted a series of six paintings for the sanctuary of this church: Prayer in Gethsemane, Behold the Man, Carrying the Cross, Crucifixion by the Romans, Descent from the Cross, and Descent into the Tomb. Each of the paintings was five meters high. These paintings survived the persecutions of the Russian Orthodox Church in the XX century and were restored in the 1990s. Today, these paintings are located near the main altar table in the sanctuary of the renovated church.
This icon was made in the icon workshop of St Elisabeth Convent.
