In Brief about the Icon

The appearance of the icon occurred in 1579 when the entire city of Kazan was engulfed in flames. Nine-year-old Matrona saw the Mother of God in a dream, who commanded her to find the icon in the ashes. A monastery was built on the site where the icon was found. However, this icon has not survived to this day. In 1904, the monastery was looted, and the icon was stolen.

In the early 17th century, Russia was struck by famine and plague, followed by the tumultuous period known as the "Time of Troubles." The Poles held power in the Kremlin, and Patriarch Hermogenes was imprisoned. He began sending messages to all regions of Russia, urging an end to discord and the formation of militias to liberate the country from its enemies.

The letters of the hierarch influenced Prince Dmitry Pozharsky and Kuzma Minin. In Nizhny Novgorod, they assembled a militia, which began to march towards Moscow. The entire campaign was accompanied by the presence of the Kazan icon. Before storming the Kremlin, a three-day fast and prayer were declared before the image of the Kazan Mother of God.

The following day, on October 22, 1612, the troops entered the Kremlin. This day became the second day of the commemoration of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God.

Materials

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Tempera paints
  • Lime, pine, or alder board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

Decorations

A hand-carved rectangular central panel. The margins, the halo, the background and other elements of the icon are covered with gold leaf.

It can be additionally adorned with wrought silver, a metal or a textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend putting this icon into an opening or a non-opening icon case.

The final price of the icon of the Mother of God and the time it will take to paint it depend on its size and the complexity of its decoration.

Once this icon is painted, it will be consecrated in St Elisabeth Convent.
