A painted icon of Saint John the Forerunner and Baptist.

This is a waist-long icon of St John the Baptist. He is shown holding a cross-crowned staff in his left hand, and a cup with his own head as a symbol of his martyrdom for Christ's sake and a prototype of the redemptive sacrifice by Jesus.

Commemorated on March 9, June 7 (uncovering of his holy head), and July 7 (the saint's birthday).

This icon is painted using the following materials:

  • Lime, alder, or pine board
  • Gesso
  • Colored wax
  • Gold leaf
  • Linseed oil
  • Hide glue
  • Varnishes (mordant, kauri gum, acryl-styrolic)

This icon has a hand-carved rectangular central panel. The background is decorated with gold leaf. This icon can be additionally adorned with wrought metal, a metal or textile oklad, precious and semiprecious gemstones. We recommend placing this icon in an opening or a non-opening icon case to protect it from humidity fluctuations and dust.
