Iconographic images of St. Nicholas of Myra

There is hardly a saint more revered and widely known than Saint Nicholas. In Orthodox churches and domestic collections, his icons occupy prominent places next to those of Christ, the Theotokos and the Holy Trinity. A byword for kindness and magnanimity, he is the patron saint of multiple big cities and countries.

He is glorified as a wonderworker for the multiple miracles he wrought in his lifetime and posthumously. He has brought healing to the terminally ill and delivered people from misfortunes and mortal dangers.

On icons, St. Nicholas appears at full and half-length, projecting an image of wisdom and kindness. He is portrayed as an elder with a short beard and grey hair, wearing a mitre and carrying a gospel. Some icons depict him in full festive vestments, and sometimes with a sword. Many of his icons are miracle-working.

Some icons narrate specific stages of his life. His childhood and schooling, ordination and priesthood, and acts and miracles are among the most common hagiographic themes. We turn to his icons to pray for peace in our families, relief from our troubles and illnesses, and strengthening of our faith and wisdom to make key decisions in our lives.

The making of your St. Nicholas icon

Here at Saint Elisabeth Convent, we have been painting icons for over two decades. We have built a large customer base is extensive, spanning multiple countries and regions and comprised of churches, parishes and homes. We have invested countless hours in learning, research and practice to hone our skills in making works of outstanding artistic merit and religious value. All these years, incessant prayer and contemplation of God have accompanied the birth of every icon.

Centuries-old Russian and Byzantine traditions have shaped our techniques. Tried and tested processes are used at every stage of production, from wood preparation to the final finish. We make our paints from ground minerals and add egg yolk in the so-called tempera technique. The fine details, masterful strokes and bright colours of our icons will please the most demanding customer. We cover every icon with a protective layer of varnish, but we also recommend placing your icon in a kiot for maximum protection and durability.

You may select from a variety of variants. Whatever your choice, you can expect it to become a valuable addition to your icon collection. We offer a rich selection of icon sizes but will be happy to paint an icon to your size. Review our product catalogue to choose an item that suits you best.
