IMP-03-01/9 Icon of Holy Martyr Warus
A half-length painted icon of Holy Martyr Warus. He was a soldier who suffered for Christ, which is why he is portrayed holding a cross in his right hand and a sword in his left hand.
Saint Warus was a military commander during the rule of Roman Emperor Diocletian. He kept is faith in secret and visited Christians in prison. When one of them died of wounds, St Warus decided to stand before court instead of him. He openly professed to be a Christian and was martyred to death.
This icon is painted using the following materials:
- Acrylic or tempera paints
- Lime, alder, or pine board with oak splines
- Low-count fabric
- Colored wax
- Gold leaf
- Linseed oil
- Hide glue
