037-XC The Crucifixion of the Lord
This icon of the Crucifixion of the Lord was created in the lacquered icons workshop of St Elisabeth Convent from a high-quality printed image, a wooden board, and lacquer. This icon tells about the death of the Savior on the cross. Jesus is portrayed in the iconographic, rather than realistic, manner, as if he was soaring and weightless. In accordance with the Orthodox tradition, his hands are pierced not through the wrists but through his palms, so as to emphasize that people crucified God by hammering nails in his hands - the very hands that had worked wonders, healed the sick, and rose people from the dead.
