056-XC The Crucifixion of the Lord
An icon of the Crucifixion of the Lord with a deesis and images of saints. A high-quality printed image is glued to a wooden board and covered with a layer of transparent varnish. The original of this icon dates back to the first half of the XI century and comes from St Catherine Monastery on Mt. Sinai. The crucified Jesus is in the center of the icon, the Mother of God stands to the left, and St John the Theologian is to the right. The following saints are shown on the margins of the icon: St John the Baptist (in the centre of the upper margin), Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, as well as Saints Peter and Paul are to the right and to the left of him; St Nicholas the Wonderworker, St John Chrysostom, St Basil the Great, St Gregory the Theologian. The side margins of the icon have images of such warrior-martyrs as St George the Victory-Bearer, St Demetrius, St Theodore, St Procopius. The lower margin of the icon of the Crucifixion of Christ contains the images of St Symeon Stylites Sr., St Symeon Stylites Jr., and St Balaam. Saint Catherine, whose name bears the monastery on Mt. Sinai, is in the center of the lower margin. The main theme of this icon is the living and creative Church centered around Christ and his redeeming Sacrifice.
