Frankincense and Myrrh, our precious offerings to our Lord

When God became flesh and came to the world, three wise worldly kings began their long journey to worship Him. They followed a bright star for hundreds of kilometres. They found Him in the manger in a cave and laid three rich offerings before him. One was gold, and the other two were myrrh and incense, or frankincense.

The Bible refers to the kings as three Magi and calls their offerings treasures. That is because the Magi represent all of us, and their gifts are the sacrifices of our hearts that we as Christians must bring. Gold is the gift of our whole selves. Frankincense stands for our worship and reverence of Him. Myrrh symbolises our thoughts prayers and actions cleansed from all sin. This section features myrrh and frankincense together as our treasured offerings to our Lord.

The making of myrrh and frankincense is considered an art, but its ingredients have been known since ancient times. According to the bible, myrrh is made from quality spices - myrrh, sweet-smelling cinnamon and olive oil. Frankincense, in the Bible, contains sweet spices, stacte and onycha and galbanum, salted and beaten fine.

For centuries, incense and myrrh have been valued for their fragrance and medicinal properties. Frankincense is a common fragrance oil that is said to alleviate stress, enhance heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, and immunological function, as well as treat pain. Myrrh gum has traditionally been used to treat indigestion, ulcers, colds, coughs, asthma, lung congestion, and arthritis. However, the bible talks about the “holy” and “sacred” frankincense and myrrh. “It shall be a holy anointing oil,” teaches the scripture about myrrh. “Whoever makes any of it for the scent, shall be cut off from his people,” as we read about incense.

Indeed, what symbol of prayer could be better than incense? Prayer reaches across the human spirit as the scent of frankincense fills the church; as smoke rises, so does our prayer soar to God. "May my prayer rise before you like incense," reads the psalm. And what more potent sign of immortality could there be than myrrh? Eternity has a lingering scent. It is no surprise that the Magi used it to express the entire Christian faith, from the Holy Trinity through our Lord's Resurrection.
