{"id":17526,"date":"2018-12-24T12:44:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-24T12:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.smallpage.online\/2018\/12\/why-your-christmas-celebration-mus.html"},"modified":"2019-02-19T06:47:31","modified_gmt":"2019-02-19T06:47:31","slug":"why-your-christmas-celebration-mus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/catalog.obitel-minsk.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/why-your-christmas-celebration-mus","title":{"rendered":"Why Your Christmas Celebration Must Include the Eucharist"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"featured_img aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/catalog.obitel-minsk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/5-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"462\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"507\" data-original-width=\"700\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"center\">I Hear the Christmas Story and I Think of the Eucharist!<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The more I hear the Christmas story, the more I\u2019m convinced that it\u2019s a theological argument for the Eucharist.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Christmas story is about how the eternal Logos (Word of God) enters into creation, by means of the Holy Spirit, and takes on flesh (this action is called the Incarnation).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Through the Incarnation of Christ, humanity is transformed.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">We are recreated!<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">We are deified.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">We are saved!<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Eucharistic \u201cstory\u201d is the same. It\u2019s about how the Holy Spirit again enters into creation and transforms the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">God came into our world through Christ, just as he now comes into our world through the Eucharist.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"center\">Keys Words in the Christmas Story Connect It to the Eucharist<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, you\u2019re saying the Christmas story is also about how bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ?\u00a0Yes!<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are a few keywords in the Christmas story that point to the Eucharist.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, the Savior is born in Bethlehem, which means \u201cHouse of Bread.\u201d Interesting\u2026<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">After He is born, Christ is laid in a manger, which is a feeding trough, which is to say that the One born was born to have His flesh eaten and His blood drank.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/catalog.obitel-minsk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/1-14.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"448\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"491\" data-original-width=\"700\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"center\">The Services of the Church Also Make a Connection<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Orthodox Church\u2019s services for Christmas are also interesting.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, the rule, which says that priests can only serve one Divine Liturgy in a day, is broken.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">At vespers (the evening service, which marks the new day in the Orthodox calendar), we hear the birth story from St. Luke and then immediately the Eucharist is celebrated.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is unique because the Eucharist is not typically celebrated at vespers.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then again, the next morning the Eucharist is again celebrated immediately after the reading of the Nativity story from St. Matthew.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"center\">The Response to the Christmas Story Is a Eucharistic\u00a0Celebration!\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">It seems as if the liturgical cycle of the Orthodox Church tells us that the appropriate response to hearing the Christmas story is to make Christ present among us (the meaning of Immanuel) by celebrating the Eucharist.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">One can say that the Church is so liturgical (which is to say, \u201cplay-like\u201d) that every Sunday becomes a Christmas play where Christ becomes Incarnate before our eyes.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">When viewed in this way, the Nativity story complimented by the Eucharist is saying:<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yes, God really became man and is present among and,<br \/>\nyes, he\u2019s really present now in this bread and wine, and, yes, when you partake<br \/>\nif it, you are united to divinity as Christ was united to humanity.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">P.S. Christmas and Eucharist Are United and They Tell the Gospel Message<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Christmas story is the story of how the uncreated God comes into creation, and it\u2019s through this action that our fallen human nature is recreated, transformed, and saved.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The celebration of the Eucharist is the same proclamation \u2013 that God became man.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">When God became man, in Jesus Christ, divinity was united to humanity. When we partake of the Eucharist, our humanity is united to divinity. Here\u2019s what Christ said,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>So Jesus said to them, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in<\/em><br \/>\n<em>him.\u201d (John 6:53-56 RSV)\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is the Christmas story; this is the gospel proclamation. This is what the Orthodox Church has faithfully proclaimed since it was founded on the day of Pentecost almost 2,000 years ago.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Come this Christmas season and celebrate with the Orthodox!<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"right\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\" align=\"right\"><em>By Fr.
