The holy ones of the Orthodox Church have various customary saint titles with which they are commemorated on the Church Calendar and in divine services.<\/div>\n

Confessor<\/em>: one who has suffered for the faith but not martyred outright.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Hiero-confessor<\/em>: one who has suffered for the faith, but not martyred, who is also a clergyman.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Enlightener of N. or Illuminator of N.<\/em>: the saint who first brought the faith to a people or region, or who did major work of evangelization there.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Equal-to-the-Apostles<\/em>: one whose work greatly built up the Church, whether through direct missionary work or through assisting the Church’s place in society.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Fool-for-Christ<\/em>: a saint known for his apparent, yet holy, insanity.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
God-bearer<\/em>: one who bears God within himself and is aflame in heart with love for Him.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/div>\n
Great-martyr<\/em>: one who was martyred for the faith and suffered torture.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Hieromartyr<\/em>: a martyr who is also a clergyman.<\/div>\n

Martyr<\/em>: one who has died for the faith.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Merciful<\/em>: one known for charitable work, especially toward the poor.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Myrrh-bearer<\/em>: one of the women who were present at Christ’s passion and went to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Myrrh-streaming, Myrrh-gusher, or Myroblete<\/em>: the relics of the saint exude holy and sweet-smelling (and often miraculous) oil.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
New-martyr<\/em>: a martyr often bearing the same name as a more ancient martyr, but usually more recent in the Church’s history.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Passion-bearer<\/em>: one who faced his death in a Christ-like manner.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Protomartyr<\/em>: the first martyr in a given region (in the case of Stephen the Protomartyr, the first martyr of the whole Church).<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Right-believing<\/em>: an epithet used for sainted secular rulers.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Righteous<\/em>: a holy person under the Old Covenant (Old Testament Israel) but also sometimes used for married saints of the New Covenant (the Church); righteous may also used as a translation for the Greek hosios, which is usually translated as “venerable.”<\/div>\n

Unmercenary<\/em>: a saint who refused to take payment for healing.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n

Venerable<\/em>: a monastic saint.<\/div>\n
