In reply to Michail. There is a hesychastic tradition that tends to read the whole Gospel in a light of the Jesus prayer. I can't disagree with it, but it's a complex matter which requires a completely new article.

In reply to Michail. That's right, thank you for pointing it out. That's a misinterpretation made by our translator. The original articles are written in Russian and I don't translate them myself, but pass it to a professional translator. This sometimes causes ridiculous mistakes as the translator sometimes can't tell the slight differences as he is not that qualified in theology. Thanks again, I will fix it right away.

Michail means “who is like God?”, not “the one who is like God”.

I don’t know about the rest of the names you mentioned.

The Jesus prayer was given and ordered to the disciples by the Lord Jesus himself. Look at the mystical supper in John’s Gospel and read the book of St Ignatius Brianchianinov on this prayer.

It did not appear in the 4th century. So many referrals to this prayer in the Epistles and the Gospels!

Thank you for this article on The Jesus Prayer. I have longed used the praye r ever since reading “The Way of the Pilgrim” and “The Pilgrim Comtinues His Way” in his search for understanding how to pray without ceasing. In fact, this prayer helps to keep me grounded in the Orthodox faith as there is not a parish for me to attend the area where I live, and the country in which I live has turned its back on God and made sodomy the law of the land and the killing of innocent children a woman’s “right.” My views are so different from my neighbors of what is happening in my country with even Orthodoxy being divided on the above stated issues, that I feel a bit like a voice crying in the wilderness and my admonishment falls on deaf ears. Please pray for me, that I not lose my way, which is the way of Jesus.
