Yes, it is possible to restore an acrylic icon by applying a semi-gloss varnish, but the outcome will depend on the condition of the paint layer, its integrity, and the compatibility of the varnishes. A semi-gloss varnish can be used as a final protective layer to shield the image from dust and other external factors. However, before application, the old glossy layer should be carefully removed by brushing the surface, and the compatibility of the new varnish with the previous one should be tested.

If the old gloss is severely damaged or cracked, it must be gently removed before applying the new varnish.

Keep in mind that icons can be painted on various substrates using different materials. Applying a new coating may alter the appearance of the icon. In the case of an antique icon, extra caution should be exercised.

If in doubt or if you are working with an antique icon, it is best to seek assistance from a professional restorer.

thank you Reader John Malov!
The really humid weather here in Asia causes the gold leaf to crinkle and check, mold sometimes grows and Br Vladimir has taught me to use hydrogen peroxide in small amounts to clean. Much appreciated!
