Dear Michael, to my shame I have not read the book of the dead yet. However, I guess that the idea can be quite similar: there should be a trial after death as St. Paul has said. I cannot accept the idea that a Christian, the one who belongs to Christ and is a part of His Body ( the Church) can be judged by the demons. It is not Christianity. Jesus has said that the Father has given all the judgement to Him, His Son. So. I will be judged and want be judged only by Christ, because I am His creature. Demons will accuse and show the sins, but the Christ is the Judge. This is the most important difference between the book of dead and The Book of Life (Gospel). All the rest and similar passages are the poetry for me.

Are the toll houses kinda like the Egyptian book of the dead and the ‘passages’ and tests the Pharos had to endure?

Dear Clara, according to our spiritual fathers, prayer is a battlefield where one should not despair, but, on the contrary, should stay awake and believe in victory. Also you should include the psalm 91 “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High…” in your prayer rule
