Dear Xenia, they do not usually name after the Lord, it is not really pious. In Russian tradition they give names in honor of the saints. There is Saint Emmanuel (died c. 304), his feast day is 26 March. Perhaps there are other Orthodox saints with such a name, you can look for them. If we were to name our child Emmanuel, would he then have Christ as his patron “Saint” or would he have to be named after as Saint. I think there’s a martyr called Emmanuel. Do you know what others do? There’s an orthodox bishop in France named Emmanuel and I wonder who his patron saint is. Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you.
