As a practitioner of traditional egg tempera, I find the Montreal Icon’s history technically profound. In our craft, we use organic wood, chalk, and egg yolk—materials that are physically “breathable.” That an ordinary pinewood board could exude myrrh without destroying these delicate layers defies the laws of our medium. This miracle reminds us that a hand-painted icon is more than art; it is sanctified matter, where the prayer of the Athos monks and the sacrifice of Brother José transcend the physical boundaries of the paint.

Having been blessed to be the first ordained to the Holy Diaconate and Priesthood in the presence of the Portaitissa of Montreal, it was a great loss personally when Brother Jose was martyred. My understanding is that The Iveron Theotokos is now in Lesna, but I have not been able to confirm this. During my five years as amissionary in Africa I KEPT a Kodak film case filled with Myrrh Saturated Cotton from the Icon on my Holy Table.
