020-XC The Crucifixion of the Lord

This icon of the Crucifixion of the Lord is a lacquered icon on wood. A printed image is attached to a board made of birchwood, and then covered with lacquer. This icon is a copy of an ancient fresco in a church in honor of the Mother of God in the Studenica Monastery in Serbia built in the XIII century. The crucified Lord is shown with his Mother and St John the Baptist to the left and to the right against a starry sky background that reminds us of what St Luke and St Mark said about the dimmed sun and the onset of darkness during the Crucifixion. A bright half-figure with a cup, accompanied by an Angel, symbolically represents the Church that faithfully preserves the Sacrament of Communion.
